Marine NP Management, Education and Development Center and SAMPAN Project

For the 2^nd Annual PSU Phuket Reserch Conference 2009 , Prince of Songkla University organized many conferences and exhibitions. The SAMPAN Programme was honored to participate to this celebration of Knowledge and Sciences through a presentation of its vision, objectives and activities by Mr.Christopher Dunbar, Programme Technical Advisor.

Les efforts pour améliorer le suivi des ressources marines et côtières ont fait un pas en avant à l'Université de Rhachabat grâce à la rédaction d'un plan de structuration solide pour organiser les groupes de données SIG (Système d'Information Géographique) existants. Le Programme SAMPAN (Strengthening Andaman Marine Protected Areas Network), Programme conjoint de 3 ans liant le Département des Parcs Nationaux Thaïlandais et le WWF (World-Wide Fund for Nature) développe actuellement une Unité Régionale de SIG pour monitorer la qualité et l'état des ressources naturelles de la zone. Second d'une série de quatre meetings, cette rencontre organisée par le Programme a réuni les meilleurs scientifiques de la région en matière de sciences de la mer, biologie et SIG, pour décider quelles informations et quelles données devraient être incluses dans la base de données et quelle structure devrait adopter cette dernière.

Premier d'une série de rencontres visant à développer une Unité Régionale de Suivi par SIG (Système d'Information Géographique) pour la protection des ressources marines et côtières, l'atelier organisé par le Programme SAMPAN (Strengthening Andaman Marine Protected Areas Network) a réuni pendant deux jours au Phuket Boat Lagoon les meilleurs spécialistes thaïlandais en matière de technologies de SIG, monitoring des ressources marines et gestion des ressources.

Nakorn Ratchasrima,September 18-20, 2009, Fifteen staff members from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation participated in a technical exchange on Sustainable Tourism to the famed western theme park Chokchai Farm in north-central Thailand. Choke Chai Farm started in the 1950’s as a commercial beef cattle farm has developed into the largest producer of dairy producers in Southeast Asia. In addition to producing some of the highest quality fresh milk, yogurt and ice cream, currently sold under the “Um-Milk’ brand, Choke Farm is host to one of the most respected educational agro-tourism programs in the Kingdom.

 The international study tour to the Republic of the Maldives provided a venue for exchanges of experiences, learning, and knowledge sharing between Thai and Maldivian government officers responsible for marine conservation areas. The tour outcomes allowed participants to compare strengths and weaknesses of each system and brought ideas of how to develop Thai MPAs. The follow up session on Technical Exchange on Sustainable Tourism to the Republic of the Maldives will be organized to allow discussion with each MPAs staff, in order to provide a venue for presentation of experiences and discussion to gain a better understanding of environmentally sustainable development and biodiversity experiences from the international study tour.
